Under supervision, to perform a variety of journey-level tasks related to the maintenance, inspection, and repair of elevators and auxiliary equipment, including electrical circuitry.

Typical Tasks

The following are the duties performed by employees in this classification. However, employees may perform other related duties at an equivalent level. Each individual in the classification does not necessarily perform all duties listed.

 

  • Inspects, services, repairs, adjusts, and maintains elevators and auxiliary equipment;

 

  • Checks electrical control and signal systems, hoisting mechanisms and cables, motors, guide rails, brakes, doors, and safety devices;

 

  • Checks temperature and moisture levels;

 

  • Oils and greases moving parts, such as fly-ball governors, pulleys, and runners;

 

  • Overhauls and cleans mechanical governors and hoists;

 

  • Replaces and tightens bearings and bushings;

 

  • Vacuums and cleans selector boards and cleans and replaces capacitors, coils, contacts, brushers, relays, switches, pneumatic timers, solenoids, runners, and elevator doors;

 

  • Adjusts and levels timing devices, ensuring that elevators stop at the proper levels on each floor;

 

  • Overhauls mechanical auxiliary equipment;

 

  • Repairs electrical circuitry;

 

  • Prepares cost estimates, job layouts, and materials requisitions;

 

  • Creates and maintains records;

 

  • May monitor the work of contractors;

 

  • May be assigned as a Disaster Service Worker (DSW), as required*;

 

  • Performs other related duties, as required.

Employment Standards

Sufficient education, training, and experience to demonstrate the ability to perform the above tasks, plus the possession and direct application of the following knowledge and abilities:

 

Training and Experience Note:  The required knowledge and abilities are attained through training and experience equivalent to the possession of a high school diploma or equivalent.

 

Special Requirements:

 

  • Possession of a valid Certified Competent Conveyance Mechanic Certification issued by the State of California, Department of Industrial Relations and maintenance of the certification for the duration of employment in this classification.

 

  • Ability to travel to alternate locations in the course of work. If driving, possession of a valid California driver’s license prior to appointment and the ability to qualify for and maintain a County driver authorization.

 

  • Based on departmental assignment, may be required to obtain and maintain a Department of Correction Security Clearance to work in locked facilities throughout the term of employment.

 

  • *As a condition of employment, pursuant to California Government Code Sections 3100-3109 and Local Ordinance, all County of Santa Clara employees are designated Disaster Service Workers (DSWs), including extra help. A DSW is required to complete all assigned DSW-related training, and in the event of an emergency, return to work as ordered.

 

Knowledge of:

 

  • Elevator electrical and mechanical components and systems;

 

  • Design, construction, operation, and repair of elevators;

 

  • Laws, rules, and standards pertaining to elevator maintenance and repair;

 

  • Common safety practices in the workplace;

 

  • Common computer systems and applications.

 

Ability to:

 

  • Maintain, diagnose, and repair elevators and auxiliary mechanical equipment;

 

  • Maintain proper stock levels and parts inventory related to elevators and auxiliary equipment;

 

  • Read and interpret mechanical and electrical diagrams and blueprints;

 

  • Understand and carry out oral and written directions;

 

  • Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, with people of diverse backgrounds and cultures;

 

  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work, at all levels, including colleagues, the public, and representatives of other agencies.

Physical Requirements

  • Based on departmental assignment, may be placed on a rotating "on call" list for weekend and holiday coverage of County facilities. On-call status requires being available and on-site within two (2) hours of notification;

 

  • Tolerate dust, noise, vibration, fumes, odors, poor ventilation, extreme temperatures, cramped quarters, and inadequate lighting, while using appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE);

 

  • Climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, reach, stand, walk, push, pull, lift, and grasp;

 

  • Ascend and descend ladders;

 

  • Lift, push, and pull up to sixty (60) pounds.
